Server 2003/2008/2012 the volume you have selected may not be extended

Windows Server 2003/2008/2012 is considered as the best operating system for office use. The added features, continuous updates, and office-oriented tools provided in the SBS (small business server) makes it stand out to other operating systems. However, these features and updates can consume GBs of data and you may end up with low disk space problems. One downside of the Windows Server 2003/2008/2012 is that you cannot edit the partition sizes at the time of installation.

What to do when c-drive becomes full? Well, the best solution to resolve low disk space problem on c-drive is to resize c-drive. Follow this post and learn more about how you can resize c-drive to free up disk space.

Resize Disk Volume server Using Disk Management Tool

Disk Management is a built-in partition manager tool available in almost all Microsoft Windows. Disk management provides several partition tools to deal with storage problems. You can also shrink, extend, and resize disk partitions within a few steps. However, it has certain limitations too and the volume you have selected may not be extended. Following is a step-by-step guide to resize c-drive using Disk Management utility

Open the Disk Management utility by going to the Server Manager.

You will all the partitions installed on your computer.

Right click on the disk partition you want to shrink and click “Shrink Volume” from the drop-down menu.

Enter the amount of space you would like to separate and click “Shrink”.

Now right click on C-Drive and click “Extend Volume” from the drop-down menu.

Complete the extension setup wizard.

You’re Done.

Note that c-drive will only be extended if the separated space called unallocated space is adjacent to it. If there is another partition between c-drive and unallocated space, you will not be able to extend disk space.

In such case, the only option is to use a third-party partition resizer that can provide additional access to the disk operations.
